Guide to Using Custom DTF Transfers
To help you achieve consistent, long-lasting results with your custom dtf transfers projects, follow this step-by-step operational guide and key post-application tips:
- Pre-Press & Pre-Heating
Purpose: Eliminate surface moisture and wrinkles from the garment to form a smooth, ideal base for transfer application. This step is crucial for ensuring strong adhesion between the transfer and fabric, and for preventing defects like bubbling or uneven bonding. Operational Parameters:
Temperature: 150–160 °C
Time: About 5 seconds
Pressure: Moderate pressure - Heat Press Operation
Application Steps: Place the custom dtf transfers firmly on the garment with the design side facing upward. Lower the heat press platen, making sure pressure is evenly spread across the entire design area—uneven pressure can lead to incomplete transfer or poor adhesion. Critical Parameters:
Temperature: 150–160 °C
Time: 10–15 seconds
Pressure: ≥ 0.24 kgf/cm² (it’s advisable to calibrate with a pressure gauge for accuracy) - Choosing the Right Peeling Method
Select a peeling technique based on your transfer film type and desired finish quality:
Instant Peel: Remove the carrier sheet right after the heat press cycle ends—do not delay.
Hot Peel: Right after lifting the platen, peel off the carrier sheet while the transfer is still hot.
Warm Peel: Let the transfer cool for 5–10 seconds until it feels warm when touched, then peel the carrier sheet.
Cold Peel: Wait for the custom dtf transfers to cool fully to room temperature (around 1 minute) before peeling away the carrier sheet. - Post-Curing Requirements & First Wash Recommendations
Required Post-Press Curing Time
After the heat press process, let the garment lie flat and rest for a minimum of 48 hours (or follow the specific guidelines from your ink/adhesive supplier). This key step lets inks and adhesives cure completely, which is essential for maximizing wash resistance and long-term design durability.
First Wash Tips
Once the 48-hour curing period is up, turn the garment inside out first and wash it on a gentle wash cycle with cold water. This method helps preserve the design’s integrity and avoids premature fading or peeling.
